About 2/3 of all illiterate people in the world are women. While there are many initiatives to fight hunger and provide healthcare or jobs to people in developing countries, very few organizations fight against the epidemic that is illiteracy. Without an education, it is near impossible for a young girl to get a lucrative job or escape gender associated roles of arranged marriage, motherhood, and slavery. There is one organization that does seek to end this problem: Room to Read.

For just $5,000, Room to Read can build a library in a developing area that corresponds directly with local girls’ education. In following with Foxcroft’s motto mens sana en corpore sana (a healthy mind in a healthy body), the Junior Class chose to support Room to Read in building a library for the class’ annual walkathon. The walkathon (April 5) drew a wide variety of support both financial and in spirit as members of the Middleburg community took the walk toward girls literacy. To date, the Junior Class has not reached their goal, but will do so very soon. If you would like to donate to support this excellent cause close to Foxcroft’s heart, you may do so here.

Backstage at the Musical

Foxcroft School had its musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” on April 20-21. The musical gave a little wit and humor to the audience and even to the Tech Crew. Foxcroft’s Tech Club was excited to help with the performance. Even though the backstage was filled with props, musicians, and casts, watching the show from behind the curtain and helping the cast were worth the time and struggles.

The musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” portrayed Joseph’s story from the Bible with music and enthusiasm. Avery F. ’13 played the narrator and Melanie M. ’13 played Joseph. As Avery, Melanie, and brothers of Joseph sang, the play became more interesting. The audience was captivated by their passion for acting and singing.

To follow the tradition of recognizing seniors of the play, Mrs. Thorndike, the musical director of Foxcroft, spoke about our two seniors, giving them flowers and appreciation. The underclassmen prepared cards for the seniors and the director of the show, too. The Freshman Class organized a concession stand to raise money for the class. The show was a success and Foxcroft will be presenting “High School Musical” next year.

I made this documentary to show that there is strength and beauty in our differences. Diversity is a concept that brings the world together! It is important to be diverse because we can learn from each other and see the world from many different perspectives! Can you imagine how the world would be if we were all the same? Extremely boring! This documentary shows how great diversity is! It displays how others feel about it, what it means to them, and why it’s important.

Student Spotlight: A Rhythmic Passion

In the budding electronic music world many names dominate the field. Unlike other types of music only a very few truly understand the depth in producing such music. In this week’s Student Spotlight, Alicia H. ‘14 showcases her abilities and skill at this art. Alicia is taking electronic music with Mr. Adams, a Foxcroft music instructor, and is excelling, creating unique and refreshing music while still learning tricks of the trade. She is constantly learning and evolving her music, having only started at the beginning of the year. Though she is still learning the programs needed to create the music, her passion and hard work are beginning to pay off. Her passion for music, which can be seen at any time whether she is in the lounge listening to music or down in the basement diligently editing her music, drives her massive improvements. When I first listened to her music I immediately noticed the amount of work put into her passion. The beats and sounds she created are skillfully placed and best played when loud. Her music could be compared to the major names in the business and I am definitely looking forward to her future. Unlike many other aspiring musicians I am optimistic in her future and in my opinion she has the ability to excel and create something amazing. Alicia H. is a new name and face to look out for in the list of musicians in Foxcroft and I am very hopeful for her future.

Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop

This past weekend, Foxcroft’s Rhythm Nation, a select group of modern hip-hop dancers, performed at the school mixer.The dance they performed got the crowd hyped, screaming, and even more excited to have a good time. As the dancers formed their circle, the crowd formed around them in anticipation. As soon as their dance’s intro came blasting through the stereo, a hush fell over the students. Everyone watched in awe as Rhythm Nation effortlessly moved through each dance and interrupted their groove by pulling in boys from the various schools. That definitely got the crowd’s attention. By the end, the dance floor was once again packed and moving. Rhythm Nation pumped up the dance floor with their moves.

Foxcroft IEA Team Qualifies for Regionals!

The Foxcroft IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) team has qualified for regionals, held this year at Clayhill Stables in Maryland. The team needed a total of 20 points overall as a team to qualify, and in the past couple weeks the team collected the last points it needed. This year Foxcroft’s team has qualified quite early in the season, with still two months left before regionals to collect points. As well as the team qualifying for regionals, there have been many individual qualifiers as well. So far there is a total of 11 riders qualified as individuals with another 6 riders with 5 points of qualifying.

Last year, the Foxcroft team placed in the top five at regionals, which qualified the team for zones. At zones, the team placed in the top ten out of all the teams in the Virginia/ Maryland area. This year, the team hopes to place in the top two at zones in order to qualify for the national finals that will be held in Syracuse, NY, this coming April.

Woodruff's Winter Workout: Too Legit To Quit

At the start of the new semester, I decided to join Woodruff’s workout. Enticed by the promise of a toned bod by spring break, what did I have to lose? Turns out, I had a lot to lose. After the first week, my aching muscles dreaded 3:45 each day. Despite protests from my body, my mind is still excited each day for the upcoming challenges. While working out, I’m silently cursing myself for participating, but ultimately I feel relief and exhaustion coursing through my veins after the intense training. Endorphins must be pumping because since the joining of the exercise group, I feel more focused and attentive.

I felt as though I was getting stronger with each day and felt healthier as I continued. That is until Ms. Schoff, an athletic intern, took over for two days of instruction. The Wednesday that she instructed us, my dignity was wounded and my muscles felt like they were on fire. I felt defeated and weak, but I pushed through. Although I couldn’t raise my arms above my head on Friday morning after our Thursday workout and had to take breaks walking my package of oranges back to the dorm, in retrospect I’m glad I took part in our concentrated bodybuilding.

I couldn’t ask for a better workout — my limits are pushed and I feel the results with each passing day. I encourage all to join when they have a free afternoon. But seriously, what do you have to lose?

1D Fan Fiction: The Newest Foxcroft Addiction

Wattpad.com or “Fan Fiction” is a website and app created in 2006 for published and unpublished writers. Coining the phrase “the best place to discover and share stories,” individuals from all over the globe create and read stories involving their favorite idols.

Admit it, you could recognize What Makes you Beautiful by One Direction, a UK boy band, loved by multitudes of tween, teen, and adult girls. The hit single reached its climax in spring of 2012. Whether it’s their accent, catchy pop beats, or endearing personalities, “Directioners” swoon over the five boys. After the release of new album Take Me Home and the music video for Kiss You, once again, girls all over the country are no less than impressed.

Wattpad.com has recently been rediscovered at Foxcroft — starring One Direction specifically. The guilty pleasure has been spreading like wild fire. Although kept secret by most, more than a couple people have downloaded Wattpad as an app. So, if you’re a closeted “Directioner” give Fan Fiction a chance. But, be warned; it’s as addictive as the new album.

Foxcroft held its annual Think Pink Tournament on January 12^th. Teams from many schools came to compete and to raise money for the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation for breast cancer research.

Foxcroft Varsity and JV Basketball Teams both played games this week. Varsity Basketball had an away game at Randolph-Macon Academy and JV had a home game against Highland High School. Both teams lost but there was much improvement throughout the games. JV and Varsity also had two more games later on in the week but had to cancel their games due to the pre-caution of the snow.
